If a fruit looks aged from its external morphology as well as internal morphology, our method identifies the intrinsic similarities between two phenotypic expressions without implementing any computationally expensive search algorithm. The average of these single numbers for less aged nuts and highly aged nuts are 4.9 and 3.8, respectively. We found that the DOS can provide a unique coefficient to represent age and ageing together using a single number. We developed a smartphone camera-based high-resolution measurement with comprehensive biophysical mathematics and a quantum mechanical concept called density of states (DOS). We investigated the internal patterns of differently aged areca nuts randomly chosen from the same age group. Throughout the game the player is guided by Kyu, a love fairy set on turning the player into a successful Lothario. Unlike regular dates, the player has unlimited moves to complete the bedroom game, but the score meter constantly drains over time, so to win, matches must be made quickly until the meter is full. After 3 successful dates with a woman, the player will be able to take them on a date at night, and if that date is successful, the player can bring the woman to their bedroom for one final round of tile matching (and, if this is successful, have sexual intercourse with her). Each successful date will also raise the game's difficulty, making subsequent dates require more points to complete. After a successful date, the player is rewarded with a picture of the woman the date was with. The player can also use special items called "date gifts" during their dates which grant positive effects to help the player earn more points. Each woman has a specific type of token that they like and dislike, and players will gain more points if they match the type of token that the woman prefers. The player must earn enough points to complete the date before they run out of moves. In order to progress through the game, players must take the women on dates, where they will play a tile matching game where they must make matches of 3 or more of the same tokens. These stats allow the player to earn more points during dates, increasing their chance of success. Doing this rewards the player with "Hunie", an in-game currency that can be used to upgrade the player's stats. The player can interact with women by talking to them and giving them gifts. ![]() Under certain conditions, these sediments come together (flocculate) to form large aggregates, namely flocs, which are larger but less dense than individual particles. This flocculation phenomenon has a strong influence on the sediment transport processes of deposition, erosion and settling (Fennessy et al. ![]() Improving understanding of the significance of flocculation processes is highly desirable because they may exert an impact on the pollutants such as nutrient and heavy metals by which more floc can remove nutrient from the water system (Manning et al. ![]() Moreover, the formation of flocs near the surface decreases the penetration of sunlight through the water column, which constrains the production of plankton. These processes have a direct effect on water quality. The accurate prediction of the settling velocity of cohesive sediment in Severn estuary is required for better understanding of (a) estuarine bathymetry changes, (b) where the deposition and resuspension occur and (c) estuarine contaminant transport processes (Kirby et al. In general, flocs are classified into two types, namely, microflocs and macroflocs cohesive sediment flocculates to form small microflocs first, and then macroflocs by combining the microflocs (Eisma 1986 Manning 2001). Microflocs can be classified as those aggregates which do not exceed a spherically equivalent diameter of 100 μm and have a settling velocity of less than 1 mm s −1 (Lafite 2001). The state of microflocs continually changes in response to the hydrodynamic parameters, the physico-chemical and the environmental conditions. While focus lock is a simple and effective method of focusing on off-centre subjects, it's not always the most convenient option. You can then recompose your image so that the subject is anywhere in the frame, but you must keep your finger half-pressed on the shutter release, and make sure that you don't change the distance between you and the subject. Then, frame the scene so your subject is in the centre and half-press the shutter release until the camera focuses. To use focus lock, you need to set your camera to single shot autofocus mode (AF-S). Using focus lock, you can place the subject in areas of the frame where there aren't any suitable AF points. ![]() This is useful on cameras which have a limited number of AF points, as they only allow you to focus on a limited number of areas within your scene. Once you have locked the focus, you can position the subject anywhere in the frame, and as long as you remain the same distance away, it will be sharp. With static subjects, the easiest way to do this is to use a technique known as focus lock.įocus lock is the perfect technique to use when you want to vary the composition by positioning the subject in different areas of the frame. Positioning your subject off-centre is one of the best ways to improve the composition of your shots, but you need to make sure that your Nikon focuses on this area rather than what's in the middle of the frame, otherwise you could end up with your subject out of focus and your background pin-sharp (a problem common to compact camera users). It could be that – in your 50s and 60s you’ll still be helping your kids through university contributing towards your children’s weddings – or even constructing a granny annexe or putting down a deposit on a new home. It’s also worth noting that, during the pre-retirement phase – you’ll likely still have some major expenses in the near-future that wouldn’t be an issue in later planning stages. ![]() If you’ve been planning to travel, or take-up other paid-for activities in retirement – it’s best to start factoring these into your expenses now so you’re not caught short. You’ll need money for the essentials – food, clothes, bills and so on but you’ll also want funds to enjoy your retirement the way you’ve always wanted to. For the purposes of budget planning however, we’ve set the pre-retirement stage at age 55 to 65 as the UK state pension age is currently 66 for both men and women.ĭuring this stage, it’s a good idea to start tracking your expenses – so you’ll know if your savings and pension income will cover you after you leave the workforce. Some people may be in a comfortable enough position to retire at 60 while others may keep working well into their 70s – or even not retire at all. There’s no definitive answer as to when you should retire. With that said, pre-retirement – the decade or so leading up to you leaving work is when you’ll most likely start to get a clearer picture on exactly what your retirement nest-egg will be. We’ve said before that planning for retirement is a lifelong task so it’s never too early to start getting on top of it. Stage One: Budget Planning in Pre-Retirement (Aged 55 to 65) That’s why we’ve created this handy, 4-stage planner highlighting the main financial concerns you need to be aware of during each stage of the retirement process. There’s a lot to think about when budgeting for retirement – so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Most workplace pensions are accessible from the age of 55 though there are differences across schemes – so it’s worth researching what you can expect to be claiming when the time comes. In the UK, there are two types of pensions you can claim – workplace and state. Of course, how comfortable you are in retirement will depend on your stream of income and, for low-earners, retirement will look very different to those with more room-to-breathe. Please bear in mind that we haven’t made any adjustments to the calculations for inflation and future changes to taxation and legislation.Preparing your retirement budget is one mammoth of a task especially as you could need it to last you several decades. It will also show you how likely you are to live to different ages, depending on how you rated your health, so that you have a good understanding of how long you need to plan for. Then it will work out whether you will have money left over, or a shortfall in the money that you need to enjoy your retirement and display this visually for you.The budget planner will then split all of your costs into essential and non-essential items. You can also set costs to stop at a future date (such as when you have finished paying off your mortgage) or you can add future costs. For each item that you add, you’ll need to decide whether it is an essential cost or not. This may include: your State Pension any other pensions investment income buy-to-let income and any income that you will earn from employment. Then add each source of income separately. Start by entering your age and current state of health. ![]() ![]() But the most authentic celebrations take place in Mexico. Thanks to recognition by UNESCO and the global sharing of information, Día de los Muertos is more popular than ever - in Mexico and, increasingly, abroad. Draped around altars and in the streets, the art represents the wind and the fragility of life. Papel picado isn’t used exclusively during Day of the Dead, but it plays an important role in the holiday. Pan de muerto, or bread of the dead, is a typical sweet bread (pan dulce), often featuring anise seeds and decorated with bones and skulls made from dough. Some families place their dead loved one’s favorite meal on the altar. At least that’s the traditional belief in Mexico. You work up a mighty hunger and thirst traveling from the spirit world back to the realm of the living. In 1947 artist Diego Rivera featured Posada’s stylised skeleton in his masterpiece mural “Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park.” Posada’s skeletal bust was dressed in a large feminine hat and Rivera made his female and named her Catrina, slang for “the rich.” Today, the calavera Catrina, or elegant skull, is the Day of the Dead’s most ubiquitous symbol. “ Todos somos calaveras,” a quote commonly attributed to Posada, means “we are all skeletons.” Underneath all our manmade trappings, we are all the same. Posada dressed his personification of death in fancy French garb and called it Calavera Garbancera, intending it as social commentary on Mexican society’s emulation of European sophistication. In the early 20th century, Mexican political cartoonist and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada created an etching to accompany a literary calavera. You’ll find these clever, biting poems in print, read aloud and broadcast on television and radio programs. These literary calaveras eventually became a popular part of Día de los Muertos celebrations. The skulls have literary rootsĬalavera means “skull.” But during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, calavera was used to describe short, humorous poems, which were often sarcastic tombstone epitaphs published in newspapers that poked fun at the living. The smoke from copal incense, made from tree resin, transmits praise and prayers and purifies the area around the altar. Scattered from altar to gravesite, marigold petals guide wandering souls back to their place of rest. Marigolds are the main flowers used to decorate the altar. If one of the spirits is a child, you might find small toys on the altar. As such, they’re loaded with offerings - water to quench thirst after the long journey, food, family photos and a candle for each dead relative. These aren’t altars for worshipping rather, they’re meant to welcome spirits back to the realm of the living. The centerpiece of the celebration is an altar, or ofrenda, built in private homes and cemeteries. |
